Tech Community… What’s the first thought that pops into your mind when you hear that phrase?

  1. Helping each other and growing together
  2. Making connections with different people
  3. Deepening your knowledge
  4. Getting swag or asking for job referrals

These are at least four things that come to mind, right? But have you ever wondered how communities are built, how they work, and how they’re managed? What’s the importance of tech communities in today’s world? Don’t worry, I’ll share my perspective on these questions. If you have anything to contribute or add, please feel free to do so!

When Do Communities Start?

You might think that tech communities only exist because technology does. However, this is debatable. Consider: When the first programming languages were developed, there were multiple people behind them. They shared similar problems, had the same mindset, and wanted to build something to improve society. So, they came together and started working on it. That’s when the journey began.

How Are Communities Built?

One or more people with similar interests or skill sets can initiate a tech community. As mentioned earlier, people with shared goals come together and start a community. Over time, others learn about the community’s existence and location. If it aligns with their background and interests, they can join and collaborate with others. This process is continuous, and the community becomes a large, supportive family. Additionally, some product-based and non-product-based companies can offer guidance and support in building communities.

How Do Communities Work?

This answer depends on many factors. Each community plans its roadmap for the year, often with a team of volunteers. They plan activities to keep the community engaged. Without people, a community is nothing. People are truly the heart of a community. So, what do communities do? They cater to people’s needs and address trending topics that can help everyone grow. They conduct workshops, sessions, and other events based on their roadmap.

The Benefits of Joining a Community

The main goal of a community is to grow together, support each other, and help overcome challenges. If you have stage fright or feel nervous about giving talks, participating in a tech community can help you develop your communication and presentation skills. Communities also encourage members to pursue their passions and do their best work.

How to Join a Community

There are several platforms that can help you find communities near you. Platforms like Meetup allow you to specify your interests, and they’ll show you relevant tech groups in your area that you can join. Additionally, many products have their own official communities. You can find details about these communities on their respective websites.

Giving Back to the Community

When you join a community, make sure you’re also contributing value. It shouldn’t be a one-way street where you only take from others. Actively contributing will have a positive impact on your profile. Of course, communities offer many more advantages, but my goal today was to raise your awareness about them.

In Conclusion:

“Community is by the people, for the people.”
